How do detection dogs work

In this video the bugs have only been there for a few minutes in the real world bed bugs have been there for number of days, weeks or even months. This gives Boomer the advantage over the bed bug "THEY SMELL" to a dog they have a strong scent. If we consider the surivablity of a bed bug they have us humans beat. For thousands of years everything in bed bug evolution has contributed to their survival. Their scent might very well be something they use to find each other for breeding or feeding. We can only hope this is the case. If their scent is used for survival we won't have to worry about a bed bug evolving without that scent. As long as they have this scent they won't beat the dogs and thats a good thing because they have us beat.

To understand how and why we work with a dog, You need to imagine two people and a dog locked in a barn each in a stall on either side of the barn. Their only view of the world was through a small hole for each to look through that allowed them to see a very small portion of the world out side. On one side of the barn there are trees while on the other side there is only a field. The person looking at the trees would think the world only had trees while the person looking at the field would think the world only had fields. Each person is totally aware of the world around them by way of their sense of sight would believe they were right ie: Seeing is believing. The dog on the other hand would put his nose to a hole in the wall with out ever looking out the dog would see "with his nose" trees, grass, insects a rabbit in the trees, mice in the field birds in the air and water on the other side of the trees, to him the world would look the same through either hole. If the dog could talk and he told the people what he seen of the world the people being the top of the food chain and the only higher intelligance in the universe would most likely have a hard time believing what the dog had told them.

Communicating with a higher inteligence

Due to the fact that dogs can't talk and we are the higher intelligence it is up to us to devise a way for the dog to communicate what it is he sees of the world around us through his nose and then pick something out for us. We on the other hand have an inadequate sense of smell and rely on our eye sight, this makes it very hard for us to conceive the world a dog lives in, a world of odors. To dog a bed bug in a couch, chair, bed or even a wall for that matter is ten feet tall and ten feet wide he can't help but find them. Imagine that dog in the barn could see out the whole in the wall and I got the scent of a tree outside made it his send then used this form of communcation to have him point out a tree outside that he has never seen only smelled. When I give him the command he would go to the hole on the wall and say their through this hole. If this hole was in a door and I opened the door he would go to the tree and tell me this thing here smells like my scent, then he'd want to know if he did good "He's a dog". A bed bug dog will sometimes find a chair, bookshelf, wall or a light socket and to him that thing smells like his scent. When a dog walks into a room that has had bed bugs in it for any length of time he knows they are there long before we could ever know know and when he searches he can take us close to where they are. We on the other hand look at a wall and say I don't see anything! there for there must not be anything there.

Our reliance on our sense of sight

Bed bugs have prayed on our total reliance on our sense of sight for thousands of years. They instinctively hide, you will only see them in the day light when you are over run with them. they wait until we are in our deepest sleep before they feed on us and they will sit for months in a crack somewhere motionless undetected laying eggs and re infesting the place. For a dog longer it's there the easier it is to find the dog uses his nose to take advantage of the fact that the bed bug hasen't moved "BOOMER" has idenitfied a number of walls, pluming conduits and elecrictial outlets that where contributing factors in on going infestations. He made bed "DEAD" bugs

Boomer the bed bug dog

Lets talk about Boomer after all this is his website. Boomer started his training at a very early age he has had almost a thousand hours training before he was a year old and has continued to work every day if not out in the real world in my home he finds bed bugs in his gif (that is the little container in the video). To him this is a game we play every day in a controlled situation he is never wrong in the time it takes the scent to propagate out of the gif usually five to ten minutes some times less he finds them so we can assume in the real world he's going to be just as accurate. He never tries to trick me because he thinks I know where they are besides he's a dog dogs are loyal and they don't conspire or plan ahead they live in the now.

Bed bug dogs tool or weapon

I've heard dogs refered to by pest control people as a tool they can use. Detection dogs aren't a tool for bed bugs their a weapon. Boomers is death on bed bugs we can't wait to be able to say he's responsible for the death of a million bed bugs
Boomers training is all detection with moderate obedience we never tell him to sit go lay down he sits when he finds bed bugs and when he finds something he puts the breaks on no matter what I'm doing I can't drag him past a bed bug.
A dog is mans best friend and Boomer is a valued member of our family, his job is to make the world a better place and he could make your world a better place. Bed bugs take your life away if you have them Boomer will give your life back.

Improtant Note

We are in the bed bug detection business we do not treat bed bugs or do we sell any bed bug products we do not profit if you have bed bugs. Boomer and I are an independent evaluation of the situation.

rickjHow bed bugs find their hosts and each other is among the least understood aspects of bed bug biology. This has long been identified as a problem (Johnson 1942, Usinger 1966), but despite the efforts of many researchers, relatively little conclusive information has been produced.
rickjThere is good evidence for the existence of an “assembling scent” (Levinson and Bar Ilan 1971), but the source, mode of action, and chemicals remain unknown. A dog can pick up these odors and determine not only where bed bugs are but also where they are going to hide making pest control more effective
rickjA strong scent comes with the presence of bed bugs, as they emit an oil-like liquid from their bodies.
rickjIf an upholstered item is infested find out if it can be treated or if it needs to be thrown away. If throwing out please destroy it so someone else does not take it home and spread the problem. Dressers, platform beds, beds, frames etc can be treated but usually require taking them apart. Remember that bed bugs can hide in the smallest of cracks so a thorough job is critical to success.
rickjMake sure the company you hire has experience treating bed bugs and are fully licensed and insured. Make sure the Technician is Certified and has previous experience with bed bug treatments.
